Website Designer vs DIY Website Builder: What Makes Sense for a Local Service Business?

We build websites for a living, so treat this with appropriate suspicion — but a DIY builder really is the right answer for some businesses, and pretending otherwise wastes everyone's time.

Here's the comparison across the things that actually matter.

    Cost

DIY runs roughly $15–$50 a month plus your domain, with no build cost. Hiring out means a one-time build — ours starts at $799 — plus ongoing hosting and upkeep, which for us is $49/month covering domain, hosting, general site upkeep and up to 30 minutes of edits.

On paper DIY is cheaper. Whether it's actually cheaper depends entirely on the next section.

    Time

A first-time DIY site typically takes 20 to 40 hours to get to something presentable, spread over evenings and weekends. Many never get finished at all — the half-built site sitting in draft is the most common outcome we see.

If your billable rate is $75 an hour, 30 evening hours is not free. It's the most expensive version of the project.

    Learning curve

Modern builders are much friendlier than they used to be. Getting something on screen is easy. Getting it to look right on a phone, load quickly, handle images properly and connect a domain is where most people stall.

    Design

Templates start strong and drift. The typical DIY result isn't ugly — it's inconsistent: mismatched spacing, five font sizes, oversized photos, a hero image that crops badly on mobile.

A designer's real value here isn't taste. It's consistency and knowing what to leave out.

    Messaging

This is the biggest gap, and the one owners underestimate most. Almost every DIY site leads with the company's history instead of the customer's problem, and buries the phone number and the offer.

Structure and wording — what we call the Straight Line — usually move results more than visual design does.

    SEO

Builders handle the basics automatically now. What they don't do is decide which pages you need, what each should target, or how they link together. That's strategy, not software, and it's the part that determines whether you show up.

    Maintenance

Someone has to renew the domain, update the seasonal message, add new photos and fix what breaks. On DIY that's you, usually at 9pm. On a managed plan it's an email and it's handled.

    When DIY genuinely makes sense

And when it usually doesn't: when you're running jobs all day, when the site needs to actually generate calls, or when you've already started a DIY build twice and it's still not live.

    • You're brand new and testing whether the business works at all
    • You have real time and you enjoy the process
    • You need a simple placeholder while referrals carry you
    • Your budget genuinely can't support a build yet
